Summary:
This lecture proposes to explore, using a cognitive theoretical perspective, the dissemination of the Mithras cult and its rituals in Pannonia via the social networks of worshippers. Using as primary evidence votive reliefs and inscriptions, the paper will examine the nature of the Mithras-cult and its rituals in Pannonia; and how they spread through individual and social (professional and familial) networks. By adopting an interdisciplinary perspective, the aim of this paper is to re-examine how the cult of Mithras gained popularity in Pannonia, and also to understand how social networks contributed to the formation of religious and provincial identities.
