Date: 2019/10/03 16:40-18:10
Place: Shisei-kan meeting room (3rd floor), Imadegawa Campus, Doshisha University

  • Dr. Doron B. COHEN (CISMOR Research Fellow Part-time lecturer, Graduate School of Theology, Doshisha University)
Summary:
Poet, novelist, visual artist, and particularly renown as a singer-songwriter, Leonard Cohen has always included expressions of his intimate faith in his work. Many of his poems, songs and prose pieces are manifestly prayers directed at a divine presence. Cohen was raised in the Jewish faith and remained loyal to it, but he was also intrigued by the figure of Jesus Christ, and for many years practiced Zen Buddhism. In this lecture a few of his printed and sung prayers, in which various religious elements intersect, will be introduced and discussed.
