Summary:
For the Eastern Orthodox Church, the idealized model of a relationship between church and state is Symphonia, which is a peaceful harmonization of the state as a body and of the church as a spirit. In my presentation, I will discuss the history and contemporary situation of the Orthodox Churches both in Russia and Ukraine, focusing on their roles in the public sphere and historical memories of history.
On July 9, 2022, Dr. Sanami Takahashi (Lecturer at the Kyushu University Institute of Humanities and Environmental Studies) presented her research at a public lecture titled “Double-Headed Eagle or Handmaiden of the State? The Orthodox Churches in Russia and Ukraine". In this lecture, Dr. Takahashi discussed the history and the current situation of the Orthodox Church in both Russia and Ukraine, focusing on the role that the Orthodox Church plays in the memory of public traditions and history. The lecture was attended by about 90 people and there was an active Q&A after the lecture. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Takahashi for the most interesting lecture.
