【Theme】“Those Who Worship Other Than You” The Plurality of Religions in Solomon Ibn Gabirol’s Keter Malkhut”

In the eighth canto of Keter Malkhut, Ibn Gabirol refers to “those who worship other than You” whose “intent is to reach You.” With this verse, the poet likely alludes not only (or perhaps not even) to Muslims and Christians, the most common religious others in medieval Hebrew poetry, but also to other groups with which the poet had no direct experience. This paper will consider the canto in the context of Jewish thought concerning monotheistic and non-monotheistic religions, particularly within Ibn Gabirol’s particular ontological system.  Further, the paper will ground Ibn Gabirol’s atypical formulation in the context of Ismaili theology, especially as expressed in the Epistles of the Brethren of Purity, that informed the development of Neoplatonism in al-Andalus.
