What is The Epic of Gilgamesh?

Summary：
The title “The Epic of Gilgamesh” is now fairly well-known, but the sort of intention with which the story was made is still an enigma. Even now, it constantly reveals new aspects of itself as new texts with different versions of the story continue to be found. Endeavours to comprehend it often seem to lead one on a journey of adventure.
2022年12月10日、公開講演会を開催しました。今回は渡辺和子先生（東洋英和女学院大学名誉教授、CISMORリサーチフェロー）に、「『ギルガメシュ叙事詩』とは何か」というタイトルでご講演いただきました。本講演で渡辺先生は、ギルガメシュ叙事詩の背景や目的、物語の構成などについて紹介されました。また、ギルガメシュ叙事詩が生と死の問題に正面から向き合った作品であり、現代に生きるわれわれにとっても極めて意義深い物語であることをご説明されました。講演会には約50名の方々が参加され、ご講演後には活発な質疑応答が行われました。貴重なご講演をいただきました渡辺先生および参加者の皆さまに、心より御礼を申し上げます。
