”When the Missionary Meets the Other: The case of a Dane, Jens M.T. Winther (1874-1970) – Based on His Own Words”

Date: 2018/05/26 13:00-14:30
Place: Meeting Room, 3rd floor, Shisei-kan, Imadegawa Campus
Speaker:
  • Prof. Christian M. Hermansen ( School of Law and Politics, Kwansei Gakuin University)
Summary:
Missionary biographies often focus on the missionary only, but obviously without “the other” there would not be a mission. In this lecture, Winther’s encounters with four Japanese of significance to his life as missionary in Japan will be discussed.
What were his descriptions of YONEMURA Tsunekichi, INADOMI Hajime, KAGAWA Toyohiko, and UCHIMURA Kanzo will be evaluated.

Christian M. Hermansen, Missionary and professor, Kwansei Gakuin University, School of Law and Politics since 2004. The lecture is based on his ongoing research on the history of Danish Christian Mission in Japan, 1898-1998.
