CISMOR Seminar no3./2021

”The Challenge of Translating the Bible”

Date: 2021/07/10 9:30-11:00
Place: Online (Zoom Platform)
Speaker:
  • Prof. Robert Alter (professor of the Graduate School, and Emeritus Professor of Hebrew and Comparative Literature at the University of California, Berkeley.)
Summary:
In 2018 Prof. Robert Alter published his complete translation of the Hebrew Bible
(Old Testament), a unique one-man effort based on his many years of studying the literary aspects of Biblical Hebrew. In this seminar, which will be held in the form of discussion with the moderator, he will share with us some of the challenges that translators of such a text must face. Specifically, he will introduce his views on the Bible as literature, and the translators’ duty to reflect this aspect of the text in their work. He will also discuss, as time allows, further issues such as: the agendas and motivations behind various translations of the Bible, contemporary tendencies in Biblical translation, and what should be considered a successful or unsuccessful translation.
