Myanmar: the Current Crisis and the Nature of the State

Date: 2022/06/11 13:30-15:00
Place: Online (Zoom Platform)
Speaker:
  • Prof. Nishikawa Yukiko ( Graduate School of Global Studies, Doshisha University)
Summary:
The presentation, introduces how 'Myanmar' came to undertake economic and political reforms after 2011 and examines the nature of the country's economy and governance. It helps us to understand why and how 'democracy' is uniquely adopted in the local context in 'Myanmar' to project a certain international image while in fact the authorities are exploiting such norms as 'democracy' and 'rule of law' to protect their own interests. This presentation includes some of the findings presented in the recently published book International Norms and Local Politics in Myanmar (Routledge, 2022).
